DEALING POKER

By Dave Adams

Table stakes

All casino poker games are played table stakes. More than just a single rule, table stakes is a series of rules that keep the game fair and prevent numerous problems. Here are the principles of table stakes games:

bullet

All chips, and any cash that plays in the game, must be kept on the table at all times and cannot be removed, except when leaving the game. While acceptable in other casino table games, "ratholing," or taking chips from your stack and putting them in your pocket, is prohibited in poker.

bullet

Only the chips in front of a player at the start of a deal may play for that hand, except for chips not yet received that a player has purchased (see Playing Behind). The amount bought must be announced to the table, otherwise only the amount of the minimum buy-in plays.

bullet

A player cannot buy more chips during a hand, only in between hands. The reason for this should be clear — if a player had a strong hand, they would want to purchase more chips, but if they had a marginal hand, they would want to be declared all-in. If they run out of chips during a hand, they are declared all-in and may only purchase more chips after the hand is completed.

bullet

All chips, and any cash that plays, must be kept in clear view at all times. This includes keeping chips of a larger denomination in front where they can be easily seen by the other players.

Cash on the table

bullet

In many cardrooms, cash on the table does not play. However, in those rooms where cash does play, typically, only $100 bills play. Smaller bills must be used to purchase chips, otherwise they do not play.

bullet

In rooms where cash does play, the bills should be kept underneath the chip stacks of the player, but must be partially exposed so other players can clearly see there is cash in play.
