THE
CASINO HOST
&
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Who
are they, what do they do and how can you get this job?
In the opinion of many what separates
one casino from the next is a good sales/marketing department. A casino
that has a good marketing strategy and some good Casino Hosts to keep 'quality
players' coming back means more tokes and job security for the
dealers. In any business it is tough to get customers in the door.
It's even harder to get them to come back. Here in Las Vegas for example
we have one property that offers virtually the same amenities as the
casino next door. It can be very difficult to recruit and keep good
players. This is where a Casino Host comes in.
The Casino Host, sometimes
called Player Development Executive is an employee of the Casino
hired to sell it's service's, of which the primary one is gaming. On the
other hand, a Casino Host Representative (Junket Rep.) operates as an
Independent Rep. They may represent several casinos at one time. Both,
Casino Hosts and Casino Host Representatives are the liaison between the
Casino and the Customer, "the human connection".
Every time someone gambles at
a casino, their wagering should being tracked by the casino's player
rating system through the player rating card a gambler placed in the slot
machine or handed to a Floor Person in the gaming pit area. A certain
percentage (varies by casino) of all their wagering is set aside in a
player rating account for the specific purpose of being used for issuing
them comps
Comps can be easiest
described as "something for free" or a reward for a
players gaming play. Such as a free room, dinner in the buffet or
gourmet restaurant, show tickets, special events and a host of other
services.
All of the characteristics
of their gaming play are entered to the casino's computer and a "comp
worth" is determined. Each casino has different methods to calculate
"comp worth". In a small casino the pit manager or even the
floor supervisor can issue a meal comp, but in most a large casinos a
Casino Host is the person who issues comps. Casino Hosts can
determine from review what and how much you are entitled to receive. In
the past, it was assumed Casino Hosts were only for the so-called
"high-roller". That's not true. The competitive nature of the
gaming industry has made Casino Hosts available to everyone which in turn
means that there are more positions to fill.
What I hope to accomplish
is to learn more about the responsibilities of people that work in player
development. What is it really like, what qualifications
must I have in order to become a casino host, how much income can I make
and so on.
